Rules Work- 2 Reasons Why You Need to Create Rules for Yourself
Like most people, I have a strong distaste for rules.
Especially rules that we don’t understand! We can understand the wisdom behind ‘don’t put your hand to fire’. But when other people (bosses, managers, etc) set rules for us that we don’t understand or agree with but grudgingly go along with, it makes us dislike the concept of rules even more.
And isn’t the point of adulthood to escape the parental rules and finally be…FREE.
It turns out, we all still need parenting. Except now, the responsibility falls on our own shoulders to govern ourselves well and that includes setting rules and boundaries for ourselves. This is the only way to make it possible to be healthy and happy.
1. Self-imposed rules are a single decision that makes a thousand decisions.
They set a standard for your life which clarifies and simplifies what you can and cannot do.
Deciding to go to bed at 10:30pm automatically answers any questions about whether or not you’re available for any plans, whether or not you should watch one more episode of a series, whether or not you should still continue texting or scrolling social media.
Rules clarify and simplify decisions, and over time become something that you ‘just do’.
2. Rules make it easy for you to not allow yourself or other people to drive you over a cliff.
The beauty of rules is that they protect you from yourself and other people.
You will not always feel like doing what’s best for yourself. But having rules means that you make a decision beforehand, and how you feel in the moment doesn’t factor in. You are free from having to negotiate with yourself or others on the same issues all the time.
The rule protects you from yourself and others.
